Getting Rid Of Excess Thoughts

What could you do less of?

Among many others, overthinking, is a trait which I require to work upon. Thoughts will come and go as it is the way our minds function. But getting stuck with a thought and thinking over and over on it is a sheer waste of time and energy.

Overthinking is not introspection. When we introspect we mull over a topic in depth considering the pros and cons and reaching a conclusion which helps us make a firm and final decision.

Overthinking is repetitive thinking which does not take you anywhere. It is consumptive and disruptive. Mostly, while overthinking one only broods with one’s own perspective forgetting that there can be another or many other ways of looking at the same thing. That is why overthinking is not always correct thinking because it precludes the other side of the story.

I am oversensitive because I overthink. Being sensitive is good because it makes you conscious of people around you. A sensitive person is responsive to other people’s feelings and needs. An oversensitive person tends to be more concerned about one’s own feelings and requirements which makes him/her rather self absorbed if not self centred.

Overthinking is unhealthy because it creates stress. Stress can have physical ramifications which can adversely impact both body and mind. For example, too much thinking can cause headaches. Severe headaches can impact eye sight. Stress induced headaches can also lead to stiffness of muscles in the neck and shoulders and even the whole body , stomach disorder and disturbances in sleep.

Overthinking also takes one away from creativity. That is why it is negative and destructive.

How to get rid of this no good characteristic?

All bad habits die hard. But if one becomes aware of one’s shortcomings one can keep correcting oneself. It is not an overnight achievement but requires prolonged self-tutoring, patience and perseverance.

When I realise I have spent considerable time on one thought I tell myself that I am overthinking and should put a stop to it now. Making oneself conscious of ones’ own flaw is restraining even if it is not curative. Most times we do things habitually not realising that what we are doing is wrong. By making your own self aware of your wrong doing you tend to put a brake on yourself.

It is not always easy because it is hard to curb the tendency of the mind. So it has to be done repeatedly like a teacher standing on the head of an inattentive student and telling him/her to concentrate and listen in the class.

At times, I nudge and tell myself that what I am thinking may be only one side of the story.  There may be another side to it too which I am missing.

At times, it helps to discuss with someone more rational and sensible so as to get clarity on a subject. There is no harm in seeking assistance when one is doubtful and indecisive.

If nothing seems to be working it is best to divert the mind with something light or even  funny. Overthinking can be stressful. Watching or reading some fun things can relieve the stress which in turn can make the mind more amenable to reason and even  flexible enough to let go.

Then there are times when nothing works. On those days I  tell myself that today is not the right day to address the issue. Tomorrow I  may be better placed to see things with a wider and newer lens. Till then let me shelve this thought.

One needs a lot of time and space to realise one’s deficiency and the ways to overcome it. The efforts may not always have a hundred percent positive result. But trying is taking a step towards bettering. And that is what I am doing everyday.

The Promise

This is in response to Esther’s Weekly Word Prompt.

This week’s Prompt is : Promise

***

The Promised Land

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where there is no boundaries

Only bonds of fraternity and compassion

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where  there is no starvation

No poverty, no deprivation

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where dreams know no chains

Where blossoming is life’s sole motivation

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where recognition is not based

On accumulation of power and acquisitions

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where the Guru imparts knowledge

For enlightenment and spiritual elevation

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where Mother Earth is preserved

And nurtured with veneration

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where harmony and peaceful coexistence

Are not outcomes of forced compulsion

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where victory is celebrated on

Winning hearts and not for exploitation

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where conflict, conquest and control

Are words obsolete, need no exposition

Where is that Promise-d Land

Where Promises made are cherished

For perpetuity and not constrained by

Connivances and manipulations

Alas! That Promise-d Land seems

Resigned to Utopian grandeur

Reigns only in a hapless poet’s imagination

The Point Of Dissension

The Point Of Dissension

Baba said, ” Let me tell you all Rama’s story. He inherited his grandfather’s small, dingy shop and turned it into a huge departmental store through diligence, industry and ethical business.”

The children looked unimpressed, “Oh! That must have taken a lifetime!”

“You start small and grow big,” Baba replied.

“We want to start big and get bigger.”

“You are inexperienced and may make mistakes. It’s better to make small ones than big blunders.”

They disagreed.

And the argument still continues between two generations, values and approaches.

Hope they see eye to eye at some point.

In Search Of Being

This is in response to Sadje’s Weekly Photo Prompts on #Whatdoyousee

The tree twisted its claws

Deeper and deeper

To find its anchor firm

The sea swallowed the sun

It’s crashing waves

Restless to kiss the

Gold encrusted horizon

The gulls swooped down

In a graceful attempt

To ride on the waves

Crying in unison

The tree atop a rock

Sprawled it’s arms wide

The waves encircled the rock

On which perched the gulls

The waves hugged

The rock…the rock

Fondled the tree…the tree

Cradled the gulls

In timeless glee

A New Beginning

This is in response to Esther’s Weekly Word Prompt.

This week’s Prompt is : Angel

***

As the year 2026 about to roll out I look forward to the New Year with a lot of hope, optimism and positivity. The beginning of every year brings good wishes from near and dear ones to start the journey of life all over again with new zeal.

I wish the New Year brings opportunities for new learnings. I hope physical health and awareness boosts mental health and awareness. I also want to figure out my role in this life, how I position myself in relationships so that it is beneficial to all involved. It may sound strange but I have recently realised that one has to constantly groom oneself to make one’s bondings stronger and better.

A purpose in life is very important. Living is not merely going through daily chores but doing something greater which gives satisfaction and confidence that this life is well lived.

In the last leg of our journey the creases should be smoothened out and clarity of thought emerge as to how to organise one’s finances and other material considerations so that no knots are left behind after the final crossover.

It’s really thought provoking how the priorities of life change as we age and gain experience. Keeping pace with changing times and requirements of the body and mind are foremost on my bucket list.

Spiritually, I aspire for deeper faith and bonding with God as well so that He fills my heart with gratitude for whatever I have or don’t have.

New Year is also a renewed lesson to know myself – my weaknesses and strengths and how to put both in use to reap benefits for self, family and community.

These are simple things but difficult to attain. I pray the angels are listening and silently saying yes.

Off Guard

The blind man left behind his glasses for her. What the hell ? Who wanted those hideous, old fashioned, black goggles!!

In spite of herself she put it on as though  compelled to do so. And there she was being pulled at a terrifying speed through a crooked, claustrophobic tunnel of space and time!!

A teleportation device !!!

Now months later it’s become her secret getaway from the daily rut of a 24×7 thankless, bone-tiring job of a homemaker.

The other day somebody remarked, “There’s something about you. You’ve changed… What’s it?”

To which she just waved her hand airily.

Away From Home

Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

After a very long time I am away from home, in another city, in another state. United with my family for a very joyous occasion I wish to reinvent myself. I also wanted to test myself how much I can take the risks of travelling and adjusting to a totally different climactic condition. But the whole idea is to enjoy a few days of leisure and laughter.

Yesterday, we (me and my B-I-L) arrived in Bangalore or Bengaluru where my nephew and niece-in-law stay. My sister had joined them earlier. Since I am not in a position to travel alone it was decided that B-I-L should accompany me and we should follow my sister later. A few minor hassles after we boarded the flight. The take-off was delayed by a few minutes due to technical reasons. During touch down, due to air traffic congestion and a bird hitting the flight right ahead, our aircraft was not given permission to land and hovered in air for some time. The landing was not smooth.

This is my second visit to Bangalore. The Kempagauda Airport is huge and aesthetically pleasing. The city is bright and beautiful. Above all, the Air Quality Index is only 50. That’s a pulmonary relief. The weather is slightly cold but pleasant.

Since my nephew and niece-in-law work from home we got to have a good chat only during dinner. The conversation naturally veered towards food. My N-I-L is in the family way. So, there’s lots of celebrations ahead. And what is a celebration without food ?

Since I am in South India I wish to have lots of my favourite South Indian dishes  – crispy sambar-vada, fat masala dosa, sizzling Utthapam and a lavish spread of thali. Plans are ongoing.

Looking forward to all that. Will keep filling you up on all the glory details of the feasts.

Till then Traa Laa Laa Laa Laa.

Morning in Bangaluru

Another Day In The Park

Around twelve-ish in the noon I was taking a stroll in the park. I have already given a tour of this park in an earlier post. It’s huge and a walk around it may be more than a kilometre and more.

It also serves as a playground for the kids.

There is a bird feeder too in one corner.

But it’s a bit dirty near the feeder as there’s a trash bin for people to throw plastic packets in which they carry the feed for the birds and usually the bin overflows.

I wish those in charge of the maintenance of the park will try keep this space clean.

The ancient trees stand as sentinels in the park.

The park also fronts the local Temple. Many strollers take a break to whisper a silent prayer.

The kids enjoy playing here in the evenings  though it’s empty now.

The flowering trees stand in a row.

Napper on the bench with a canine companion.

I was surprised to see a vendor inside selling tid bits.

The rows of seasonal flowers are a splash of colour amidst the overwhelming greens.

In the last post it was an inviting red stone  bench. This time I spotted an attractive green iron bench.

The gardeners are at work even midday. The park needs constant caring.

Pet Peeves Of A Perfectionist

Name your top three pet peeves.

There are many irritants which make my brows furrow.

Those who carry home a big fat salary but don’t deliver jobs expected from them. The ones that have of late become a cause of peeve are the sweepers on the payroll of the Municipal Corporation Department.  They are paid well. It’s their job to clean the streets and roads everyday. Most times they play truant. If they do attend to their duty it’s done haphazardly.

You can report them but why get regular work done by lodging complaints?

Insensitive neighbours lacking in civic sense. We have a new neighbour on the first floor. They are getting the flat renovated before shifting. So we have rubble piled up on the street fronting the ground floor flats. Even after several requests for disposal some left overs remained scattered. Finally some of it was disposed off by one of the members of the Block Residents Welfare Association and some by yours truly. There is still a heap piled up in the shaft. Who cleans it up is yet to be seen.

I despise the act of begging. It’s an organised activity. In every traffic isle there is a bunch of beggars who look every way fit to earn a livelihood by honest labour. But they won’t. Some carry wads of currency notes tucked in between their fingers. You can get a hundred bucks changed by them. Some day I am sure they’ll be fishing out a scanner for online payment as well. I won’t be surprised if they do.

Recently, at a traffic signal a gypsy girl started cleaning the windscreen of my car without asking. I told her I am not carrying any cash but she did not listen. When she asked for money I explained to her that she should ask before doing the job because nowadays nobody carries paper money and giving  small changes is just out of the question. I don’t know whether she understood but I felt bad for not paying her.

This is an incident of being compelled to pay for a random service required or not. The girl thought she will anyway get the money even from a reluctant passer by as she has provided a service unasked.

Being a perfectionist I perhaps judge people too sternly and expect them to behave the way I would. But the world does not go by what should be. I guess in today’s times when social and moral values are generally on the decline it’s best to learn the art of ignoring to a certain extent or end up being judged  as an over demanding or cantankerous person by others.

The Mask

This is in response to Sadje’s Weekly Photo Prompts on #Whatdoyousee

My life is an open book

I do not believe in masks

You can see me as I am

Touch me , hurt me,

Even heal me if you like

But I have a wall around my heart

Which you cannot break

Or cross over even if you want

You cannot see , feel , touch , hurt or heal

What’s within…its safely ensconced

I have a perfect armour erected around

But not a masquerade …no

I do not believe in masks

That can slide off anytime
