The house was narrow, dark and long-ish, one room leading to the other.

Through the back courtyard  the first floor, where the landlord lived, could be easily accessed.

The neighbourhood was called the ‘Shoemakers’ Gully’ for obvious reasons.

“But it’s very safe”, Said Ali Jethu, father’s friend.

The burning  proof of which we got when our house was broken in one night.

One shout and the entire gully was there armed with rods and sticks.

However, the intruder turned out to be the landlord’s daughter’s secret lover and not a thief.

    If landlord’s daughter’s thief
Can prove equality of those lived upper
    And shoe makers
Then one must thank the thief.
    If the incident inspired
    Such a beautiful poem
Then the poet must be thanked 🌹🌹🌹

  4. Sometimes the poorest places are the safest because of that community solidarity. When travelling to dangerous spots, I often chose such places rather than the obvious targets of international hotels

This locality was not poor. The shoemakers were rich people but not show offs. They led simple lives. The only discrimination was on account of their profession and illiteracy.

But they respected the educated families living amidst them which is, unfortunately, not the case now.

      Money seems mightier than education.

That’s the kind of neighbors to have. Hopefully the boyfriend came away unscathed.

I am sure they will still tell this story for years to come. Did she marry the secret lover or did she have more secrets?

“The landlord’s daughter’s secret lover” made me smile. Maybe he was, indeed, a thief of a different variety 🙂
