“It’s always a pleasure talking to you ma’am.”
He opened the car door and gestured gallantly for me to alight.
We walked down the boulevard.
He was ex-army. Tall. Strongly built. With a pronounced limp.
We had met at a charity. Then on another occasion…Then again…
At first reticent he had gradually opened up.
And talked about the war, his nightmares, his dead wife…children settled abroad.
I listened.
Offered him coffee when his eyes misted.
He’d thank me profusely for listening to him patiently.
I’d smile back.
It’s a month now.
I am still waiting…

Very well written

What a poignant piece! The restraint in storytelling makes the ending even more powerful. That last line lingers long after reading. Beautifully done.

Geeta, a beautiful story. I am not sure what she is waiting for? Sounds pretty perfect as it is. Expectations can spoil so many things.
