Today I read a post by one of my well-meaning co-bloggers who pointed out that one of the comments, on a poem posted by me, was AI generated and though perfect in its lingual expression and effect it was ‘lifeless’.

The observation lingered in my mind for many reasons. A few very obvious questions that popped up were :

What is the psyche behind using AI Chatbots for writing posts and comments?

Should we check out each and every post or comment, whether it is AI generated, before liking, commenting or subscribing ?

Or

Should we totally ignore such posts and comments?

Whether WP, as a platform, should devise an appropriate mechanism to restrict the  posting of AI generated write-ups and comments ?

Are using AI generated images (which are quite obvious) equivalent to AI generated posts and comments?

To my mind the answers are :

In this fast moving age, putting up a post with the aid of an AI tool is the easiest way out. The dictum of modern times is to generate “results” without wasting time or making efforts. So, from that perspective, the use of AI, to some bloggers,  seems okay.

Moreover, not everyone has the skill to write but craves to say something. Hence the help of AI taken.

Similarly, one wants to impress with an expressive and appreciative comment. But does not have enough command over the language. That is why AI comes up as the best solution.

How do we differentiate between AI and genuine blogger generated comments or posts then ?

By checking out with AI tools each and every time (?) which is a time consuming exercise. Keep on doubting while acknowledging the comment or liking the post ?

I believe the blogging community emerged as a medium of expressing, exchanging and building public opinion on various issues. Every genuine blogger blogs out of certain inner necessity – an innate urge to vent. Those who are writing only by means of AI are actually competing with those who write on their own trying to assert that they are at par, if not better. This, in my opinion, infuses an element of unhealthy one-upmanship which is unacceptable and completely avoidable.

AI tools operate on vast resources of collected and collated inputs or information. It can be used as a referral to fall back upon, e.g.,  to authenticate/verify facts and figures (which is also not hundred percent fullproof/correct under all circumstances) but to float an idea or view thrown by AI as one’s own, for me,  is not exactly ethical, genuine or transparent.

Dishing out a thought provoking philosophy, an inspirational quote, a beautiful expression, soul stirring poetry or prose and getting numerous likes and appreciative comments on them is tantamount to making fools of the committed readers, co-writers and subscribers simply because the whole gamut of words and thoughts is not actually original.

Just as we declare the source of the images attached to a post why not make a disclaimer at the beginning of the write up that it is AI generated or AI aided ? But again that would take away the charm of recognition, wouldn’t it?

At the expense of making a farfetched assumption, in case views aired in a post happen to go the wrong way and create an uproar, hurt someone or some group or community’s sentiments who is to be held responsible? The AI? The user ? Or an identity which does not exist at all ?

Turning our faces away from modern day technology is no resolution of this complicated situation but yes leveraging technology sensibly, ethically and  with sensitivity should definitely not be averted.

Whether WP needs to address the issue in a comprehensive manner requires an extensive debate.

Views of readers are solicited.

Polite dissension is welcome.

Value addition is eagerly awaited.

Though it is  obvious let me reiterate that the image is AI generated.

Interesting Foot note:

I have never used ChatGPT before. On a whim I asked it to write a poem on winter. This is what it came up with…

You said

Write a poem on winter

ChatGPT said:

Winter arrives on quiet feet,
A silver hush on every street.
The trees stand bare, their secrets shown,
Dark ink against the sky’s pale stone.

Breath blooms briefly in the air,
A fragile cloud, then gone somewhere.
The sun hangs low, a distant flame,
Too tired now to play its game.

Snow writes letters on the ground,
Soft white words without a sound.
Time slows down, the world grows small,
As frost etches lace on window and wall.

Yet deep beneath the frozen earth,
The seeds remember warmth and birth.
Winter, stern and clear-eyed, knows
How to teach us how to pause—then grow

I wonder from where these lines are taken (read stolen) because I am sure AI may be super intelligent and informed but not exactly poetic.

Poetry is not only a skill but essentially an art of crafting subtelity of feelings into words.

Can AI feel those subtle emotions and convert them into artistic expressions ?

Logic aside, I have an uncanny feeling that I have read this poem somewhere before.

God help the genuine writers!!!

  2. Even when AI instils perfection humans are beyond it!
    That’s where the essence lies.
I use Ai to create papers and test sheets or to understand something or to roll out perfectness when my job demands it.
I have never been fond of fancy posts or the posts that are extra dreamy. They should be a part of your inner circle. Rest everything is short-lived… If they have it they will go a long way and if it’s sourced its meant to end it at some point 🧿
    Have a happy Tuesday di🌷

Ai cannot steal geniune content. They will be shunned fast. Just need to wait it out! Written blogs come from heart and AI doesn’t have one!

Let it be. Don’t worry! It’s the whole world gone wrong, we cannot correct. I have gone through and am going through similar experiences. I have written several times that there are masks, people moving with different names, chat bots etc. Another good & trustworthy writer told me to keep calm on such matters. We are here for our pleasure of writing. We meet good people, like we met. Therefore, keeping in mind such good aspect/s of WordPress, we should neglect other things. I modestly felt to say this to you. I haven’t read your complete post carefully. I read the beginning. I am busy in other things. Knowing the thrust in the beginning I wrote this. If I’m wrong please don’t pay attention to my comment.

Geeta, I’ve known since some time that some long and seemingly thoughtful comments are AI generated. I just write a simple thank you in response. As for AI generated posts/ poems, I really don’t have time to read them as they all have the same feel- a surreal use of words that aren’t associated with the feelings described. I don’t have the time or energy to read the AI generated content because whoever maybe posting it- it reads the same- Artificial.
Thanks for starting this discussion. I doubt if anyone will admit to writing comments or posts using AI.

These days, AI-assisted illustrations are everywhere, and that’s just how times are changing. But for those of us who still draw on our own, the feeling is different.😍
A line drawn by hand and a thought written from the heart reaches another heart directly.
AI can help make the work look better, but it cannot take away that feeling.🙂
I believe creation should come from within first.
Technology can support it, but it can never replace the human touch. 🌷

  7. I have nothing against AI used helpfully, but to my mind it smothers creativity and I prefer to use my own which is the purpose of my blogging. Your pictures are helpful and generally amusing

  9. A very balanced and honest reflection. What resonated most is the idea of inner necessity—that urge which gives blogging its pulse and authenticity. AI can certainly assist, but when it substitutes lived experience and personal voice, something vital is lost. Transparency, as you suggest, may be the ethical middle path, though it does challenge our notions of recognition. This is a debate worth having, and you’ve raised the questions with sensitivity and clarity. Thought-provoking read.

All my writings are my own thoughts, but they are AI- assisted for grammars since I’m not so good in it. But, I love sharing my own thoughts, and I never used chapgpt yet or AI-generated content, and I have no interest to do it. I want originality and authenticity. And now, I adore posts which shows real photos even if it is not so polish. I crave real content. I also trust a site if I see post a day, not multiple posts in a day, as I doubt that they are written by AIs. I have another basis for trusting a site, too, especially paid one. I like this post, gc

Thank you Hazel for your liking and honest reply. You know I can make out by the way a post is written that it’s original. Yours is absolutely original and authentic and honest. That is why I love reading it. AI help to correct grammar is totally correct. Thanks for reading the post and your appreciation.

I have the same thoughts as you on this topic. We cannot stop the advent of technology. In fact now we may be able to identify AI generated writing. But what about when it gets better, as it will eventually? I have no answer to that. What I know is that I write because I have an inner urge, and of things that occur to me, bother me, or touch me in some way.

I don’t know whether AI can get better or not but one thing is sure we will forget to write on our own if we depend on AI so much like we have forgotten to calculate on our own after the advent of calculators.

  12. AI can arrange words well.
Human writing carries feelings and life.
GC, both can exist, but truth and balance matter.
Now the world is changing very fast.
    People change.
    Thinking styles change.
    Many people feel rushed.
Creative effort takes time and patience.
So easy tools become attractive, and AI fits into that space.
Even elders sometimes feel left behind by fast technology, and slowly lose interest.
Oldies , must move with the flow, and not get disappointed with the trends 😃

  13. Geeta Ji,

You have raised a burning issue and if I start liking, I must like all the comments on this post because all are likeable in the context of the post. I agree to your thoughts and share your concerns. AI generated blogged stuff is as big a problem as the plagiarized stuff is. My several posts have been plagiarized on internet and they have got likes (and comments too). The same way, AI generated blogs are bound to get likes (and comments). The original writers won’t stop writing though your example of calculator is an apt one but the thing is that the readers won’t be able to recognize whether the matter read by them is original. If the writing exercise is carried out to get creative satisfaction or venting out own feelings, the writer need not bother that his creation may be used by someone else through AI. As far as poetry is concerned, AI cannot create poetry on its own, it has to lift it (as it is) from somewhere. We can call it AI generated plagiarizm. I am not able to see any solution to this problem in the world of blogging. The platforms (like WP) can come up with some solution and they should. We, the creative ones, can’t afford to kill our time and energy by bothering over it (if we are not in a position to do anything meaningful about it). However if some genius can find out a solution to this ticklish problem, he will deserve a standing ovation from all the sincere bloggers and creative people (including the poets).
