This year it hasn’t rained much but still for the first time a mushroom sprouted under the Champa tree.
I do not know who picked it up but it wasn’t there after a few days. Was it edible ? No idea. But its presence surprised and elated me.

The sad news is that the rodents have destroyed most of my plants. The other day I had left a handful of dog food for Chhin Chhin who showed total indifference to it and walked away haughtily. But soon after I saw two big fat rats stealthily making way towards the food. I scared them away by stamping my foot hard. Later I placed a brick on the manhole from where they had emerged.
A chaotic scene takes place when I serve food for Chhin Chhin every afternoon. She is very choosy. Sometimes if the food is not to her liking she just turns her back but sits patiently for a better alternate. At times she does me a favour by accepting whatever I give her. As she eats a sentinel crow perched on the Champa branch caws to the full capacity of her lungs. I try to figure out her language which appears to me like, “Oh! She is eating away! She has eaten everything off the plate!! Oh God there’s nothing left for us. Oh! Oh! Now what will we peck on. And I am sure this old fatso is not going to give even a tiny morsel to us. Oh Lord! The immense cruelty…the enormous injustice of it all.”
I wish we could clamour like that in the face of unequal distribution, gross misappropriation and blatant mis-utilisation of wealth and resources in the country!!
Will anyone hear us out??

Rodents really are so unpleasant; destroying everything on their way…

I know Aptivi. I have the same feelings for them but I guess for the ecological balance they need to be there.

Very true, they’re there for ecological balance. 👍

I used to feed some ravens that lived behind the house we had. I gave them a mix of meat that contained heart and offal, that the local butcher sold as pet food. They loved it. Very intelligent ravens and crows.

I agree with you Little. I don’t know about ravens but crows are very observant and communicative. I have observed that they come only to my flat, maybe because of the Champa tree and don’t go anywhere else.

I had a rodent problem earlier this year. They were getting into my chicken feed! Luckily, I was able to persuade them to move to another locale (my dogs helped). 🙂

I can very well imagine your soldiers at work. My soldier left for doggy heaven last year. But had she been with me I don’t think she would have done much because being a true blue labrador she thought every moving creature was a play thing. My strays are more alert. But I don’t think they have spotted them as yet.

I hate critters in the garden and rodents inside the house! So who ate the mushroom! 🧐

I hate too. But gardens are their place. And now that you say I think the rodents had the mushroom. 😁

What begins with a tiny mushroom and the daily drama of Chhin Chhin, rats and an outraged crow quietly becomes a sharp reflection on society. Your humour makes the observation even more powerful: nature has its own chorus of protest, while human beings often remain strangely silent before inequality and misuse of resources. The crow’s indignation may sound comic, but the question it leaves behind is anything but will anyone hear us out?
