What was your favorite subject in school?
As I age this belief gets more and more deeply rooted that whatever happens to us is for the best. God is a meticulous planner. He plans our destiny, charts the path and facilitates our journey in every possible way.

Now, how is this related to the prompt?
I will come to that now.
In school I was a terribly confused soul. Poor in science. In fact every other subject. Only loved literature. Wanted to pursue English Honours in college. But father said NO. Those were the days when parents decided their offspring’s attire to career.
Professional qualification is the need of the hour today. Around four decades back father pronounced literature would not facilitate career progression. So, I had to opt for a subject suitable for competitive exams. Perhaps he thought I had the capability to be an IAS or IFS. I had none.
However, father’s untimely demise changed life’s course drastically. I tried various options – from private to school jobs before landing with a Public Sector posting. Starting from the grassroots I inched up. This slow progression helped me a lot throughout my career. I handled higher responsibilities before getting the corresponding grade!!! In short, I was prepared for the next step up the ladder functionally way before actually holding the post.
I realized my love for words – be it any language – much later as I started blogging. And then there was no stopping!!!
But I still resent that I could not pursue a subject I was academically inclined to. A subject which my average brain could relate to. Perhaps grasp a little as well. I guess I would have been happier.
The subject I studied only interested me in parts though I was considered an ace student. And it in no way facilitated my career contrary to my late father’s pronouncement.
Just because it was deemed ‘practical’ to do a three years’ graduation course in a subject which was thought to have better prospects I was forced to attend lectures which I half understood and appreciated the least.
Coming back to where I started. God had other plans for me. Had I devoted myself to the subject of my choice perhaps I would have been least prepared for the unexpected turn life took soon after. I would have perhaps nurtured dreams of becoming a writer or joined the bandwagon of teachers and professors. Frankly speaking I am not cut out for the latter. The former would have pampered the dreamer in me which would have been disastrous given the zigzag graph of my life. How could a dreamer withstand so many ups and downs?
I always had to face situations which I dreaded the most. I dreaded tough subjects I had to study one. I hated being away from my family I had to leave them to earn a livelihood. I loved this city I had to settle in an alien one for eight long years before I could make it back home. I wanted to run away from a dissatisfying job I had to stay put. Likewise, luck did not favour me to pursue academics of my choice I had to find solace in whatever course I got into.
That’s how my life has been.
Two months hence I am hoping for a sedentary life only God knows what’s there in store for me.

Write. My family needs meant I couldn’t go to University for English literature. Now I can do what I love.

Thanks Derrick for the support. You and I seem to be on the same boat. I couldn’t enroll for post graduation due to family needs.

This post brings back memories of my father sitting in Principal cabin in a KV school in a small town in central India. Due to staff limitations we were asked to choose one group in 11th from maths + biology or biology + hindi. I was the ugly ducking and wanted to study maths + hindi. My father supported me and signed a document saying if I fail in any of the subjects it will be solely my responsibilty. Those were the days.

Yes, those were the days. I wonder whether those were better or these when children have greater exposure and awareness and are highly career oriented.

A good quesiton but we were fortunate in a different ways. The cost of living and education was not so high.

Life’s unexpected turns, from a diverted academic path to diverse experiences, reflect a meticulous plan. Embracing challenges prepared you for the unpredictable. Now, at a crossroads, past challenges seem like stepping stones, affirming the belief that everything happens for the best.

Thank you for summarising beautifully what I could not express in so many words. On hindsight many things seem inarguably rational and necessary. However, while going through the phase it appears to be insufferably unending.

I appreciate your kind words. It’s indeed a journey filled with unforeseen challenges. While hindsight brings clarity, enduring those phases can feel relentless. Wishing you strength and positivity as you navigate through it.

Reading and writing are my main loves – I did English Literature at university, taught English until retirement and now carry it all on for my own pleasure and in hopes of producing something worthwhile.

That’s so nice. Here we seldom get to follow the passion of our lives as our profession.
